What’s inside

Fifteen pages, written the way Adam explains things in the room.

The science, with the receipts in the back, and what it actually means for your Tuesday afternoon. You run on three systems. This guide is the map of how they work together, why they misfire, and where you can reach in.

The chapters

Ten short sections, one map.

  1. The three systems you run on.

Reactions, emotions, and thoughts, and why the oldest floor wins under pressure.

  2. The cycle you are always in.

Thought, emotion, action, counter-reaction, and the two places you can reach in.

  3. The prediction machine.

Why your brain decides how your day feels before you reach the parking lot.

  4. When the alarm runs the building.

What burnout and sustained stress do to clear thinking, and why creativity goes first.

  5. The speed problem.

Fast states and slow states, and why the scroll feels like rest but is not.

  6. The other face of it: shutdown.

Flat, numb, and tired regardless of sleep is the same system, in depletion.

  7. Read your own gauge.

A simple way to notice which state you are in before you try to change it.

  8. The levers, and the input valve.

Three systems, three levers, and the one you forget about.

  9. Proof that thought does physical work.

The study Adam keeps in his back pocket, and what it means for practice.

  10. When this is not enough.

A plain page on where coaching stops and clinical care begins.

About the author

Adam Grimm, M.A., ACC

M.A. Clinical Psychology | ICF Associate Certified Coach (ACC) | Completing doctoral studies in clinical psychology

Adam came to the science the hard way: 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, 13 of them in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), the bomb squad, where reading a system correctly is the whole job. Three of those years were in war zones. He medically retired carrying the trauma and burnout this guide describes. Now he applies brain and nervous-system science to your internal systems, and to the life you run on them.

“Every load-bearing claim in here has a published study behind it, and the references are in the back like any paper I would hand a colleague.”
